A hearing aid is an electronic device that amplifies sounds for persons with hearing problems. Basically, a hearing aid works in the same way as any public-address system. It contains the same components although all these components are in a miniature scale and the amplified sound is delivered to the ear of only the person wearing the hearing aid.

The main components which include the microphone, the amplifier which has transistors and integrated electronic circuits, the miniature receiver and the battery of a hearing aid are enclosed in a shell, which is usually worn either behind or within the ear or in the stem or temple portion of the eyeglasses. A small tube directs the amplified sound from the receiver into the auditory canal of the person wearing the hearing aid. This type can fit into the ear canal with only a small portion protruding. However, for people who suffer a more severe hearing impairment, e a more powerful amplifier is required and so this bigger device, usually encased in a chassis smaller than a deck of cards is carried around in a shirt pocket. A cord then connects the amplifier to the receiver in the ear. Most hearing aids have adjustable controls and some have directional microphones.
