Flax Seed Facts
Flax, also known as common flax or linseed is domestic to the regions of the eastern Mediterranean to India. Flax is grown for its omega 3 flax seed and its fibers. Other parts of the plant are used in making dye, fabric, medicines, fishing net, and soaps. It is also grown as ornamental plant in gardens because of its pale blue flowers with five petals.
Flax seeds come in two varieties – brown and yellow or golden. Most of its types have the same nutritional values and equal amounts of omega 3 fatty acids except or the yellow flax which is very low in omega 3.
Although the first recorded use of flax seed for cooking was way back in the ancient Mesopotamia, it has been better known as ingredient in paints, fiber and cattle feed until now that people starts to realize the benefits of flax for the human body.
It is really easy to incorporate the use of flax in our daily diet. A tablespoon of flax seeds, combined with three tablespoons of water can serve a substitute for egg. Also, it can be mixed with oatmeal, yogurt, pasta and many more.
Since milled flax seeds are chemically stable and can be stored at least four months at room temperature, flax seed users prefer to buy wholesale flaxseed. It can be stored for that long without a change in smell, taste or marks of rancidity.
