Maintenance of leather garments and lingerie
Leather lasts a lifetime with proper care. Given below are tips for its preservation.
Protection
• Avoid exposure of leather to snow, rain and sweat.
• Hang your leather clothes in cool, dry, spacious places. Do not hang on metal hangers.
• Stuff them, lest they lose shape. Stuff shoes with shoetrees.
• Do not store them in plastic.
• If you must cover them, cover with a cotton cloth.
• A conditioner must be applied on the night wear lingerie frequently to preserve softness.
• A safe repellent product could be used for conditioning it.
• The conditioner must not contain mineral oils or petroleum and it must not leave an oily residue.
• Use a soft cloth to apply it.
• Do not apply it on suede.
• Excess conditioner must be removed.
• If the garment becomes wet, apply conditioner before it dries.
• Wear it only after it dries.
Cleaning
• Try on a cleaning solution on hidden areas of the item first to identify staining.
• Urine, blood and other stains and oil marks must be eliminated by washing immediately with baby shampoo in little warm water.
• To eliminate odour, soak in a solution of a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate in one litre water.
• Applying a moderate iron on blotting paper kept on the leather helps remove wax.
• Soaking for half an hour in mild bleaching solution kills germs.
• To remove Mildew, apply mild soap with disinfectant and water.
• A hand wash with baby soap, fabric softener or mild soap and warm water is the correct method of cleaning leather.
• Rinse away all the soap. Use a soft brush to remove soap stuck to the stitching.
• Squeeze away the water taking care not to twist it the garment.
• Dry metal accessories if any, to prevent rusting.
• Drying of leather must be done at room temperature by laying it flat on a dry towel.
• Never expose them to heat.
• Drying takes two or three days.
• Remove the rust of metal fittings with brasso, chrome cleaner or nickel cleaner depending upon the metal.
• Apply conditioner to the piece and its metal fixtures.
